motorsport is what drives us

Motivated by a belief and desire to succeed, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher laid the foundation for AMG back in 1967. Boundless passion for motorsports paved the way for legendary achievements and continues to leave its mark on the spirit of our brand to the present day.

Motorsport History

A legacy of passion

The motorsport history of the brand with the three-pointed star begins on 22 July 1894, the day of the world's first motor race. It led from Paris to Rouen and ended with the victory of two vehicles with a Daimler licence engine.

This was the start of a unique string of success with many defining moments: from the birth of the legendary 'Silver Arrows' at the Eifel race in 1934 to the outstanding title records of the most recent Formula 1 era.

The first sporting milestone in the name of AMG came in 1971 with the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG and its sensational performance in the 24-hour race at Spa. A place of honour in the history books also belongs to the C-Class from Mercedes-AMG, by far the most successful vehicle generation in DTM history. Since 2010, the brand's motorsport history has continued to be written through the countless successes of the Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing teams around the globe.
